Varkala beach mostly known as Papanasam Beafrom where situated 50
Kms away from Thiruvananthapuram Town and nearly 30 Kms away from Kollam. This
beach is really an alternatior the famous Kovalam Beach, which is. owadays
more commercialized.
Situated at the outskirts of Trivandrum Town this beach
occupies lots of tourists’ attractions like the calmness and coolness of a
beach, a 2000 year old Sri Maha Vishnu Temple and the Ashramam - Sivagiri Mutt.
Varkala beach is the only South Indian Beach where Cliffs
are found very near in Arabian Sea. Cliffs are natural sedimentary formations
or rock formations or a unique geographical feature that are found in the so
called flat Kerala Beaches. These cliffs are eye catching formations in
Varakala Beach and are called as Varkala Formations. A paved foot path along
the distance of these cliffs makes the walk through this Beach a memorable one.
One can experience the coolness and pureness of the spout water that are coming
out of these cliffs. Lots of spouts can be viewed there.
The natural spring Papanasanam Beach got its name because,
the water there is considered to have medicinal and curative properties. A bath
or dip in this beach is believed to be the purifier of sins and body.
As told already the next attraction is the 2000 year old Sri
Mahavishnu temple situated on a cliff facing the beach. Another one is the
Sivagiri Matt built by famous/ great Hindu Philosopher Sri Narayana Guru.The
Samadhi of Guru attracts thousands of devotees every year during the Sivagiri
Pilgrimage time to here.
Varkala Beach is home to lot of Ayurvedic Massage centres and resorts.
Best time to visit:
December to February is the best time to visit here. After
March temperature here will go above 35 deg C. Also try to avoid the rainy
seasons, June to November.
How to Reach There:
By Rail: Varkala Railway station is the nearest station. But one have to check your train has stop there or not. From there take an Auto, just 3 kms journey. 50 rs.
Kollam is the nearest main railway station, and is just 35 km away from varkala. Trivandrum Central, 46 kms away, is the Nearest Main Railway station from where one can get good connectivity via Road, Rail and Air towards all other major cities. one can get lots of public transport buses to this beach station from Trivandrum Central at any time. Taxis are also available.
All facilities like ATM, Police Aid Post, nearby Hospitals and Taxis are available for the tourists.
