Ilaveezhapoonchira- beautiful hilly area- trekking spot- sceninc spot to unveal the beauty of sunset and sunrise

Ilaveezhpoonchira-The 'valley where leaves don't fall', named so only because the place has no trees. This is one of the most excellent, beautiful adventurous places in Kerala to enjoy the sunrise and sunset. Actually this is an answer for all who seeks yet another place to reveal the mind blowing beauty of the Kanyakumari sunrise and sunset...!

This gorgeous picnic spot, in the midst of the beautiful hillocks near Kanjar, surrounded by three enchanting hillocks - Mankunnu, Kodayathoormala and Thonippara each rising into a 3200 feet, is a very ideal place for trekking lovers.

The Ilaveezhapoonchira valley is spread over thousands of acres of the district of Kottayam and is one of the main attractions of the district. The view of Malankara Reservoir from the top hill is another pretty scenery to enjoy. Also at the time of monsoon, the valley will change to a scenic lake and the beauty entirely changes to another.

The place can be easily reached from Thodupuzha Town, just 20 kms from there, and 55 kms from Kottayam. then join the Moolamattom road, at Muttom. After a small journey of few kms, you will reach a place, Kudayathoor, and you can see a sign board, directed right, which tells you, ‘Ela Veezha Poonchira 7 kms’.

Here starts the actual ride, can enjoy the beauty of journey from here onwards. The road sides are nourished with greenery. One can spot small small streams and waterfalls on the way. The water will be very pure for drink and its very cold. But, while the beauty of nature continues, the beauty of tarred road ends within in a few minutes journey. After that the tarred road changes to hilly path and only a 4 Wheel Drive vehicle/jeep can lift you up or you have to walk. But the walk is for only a 1.5 Kms.

There is a Rest House at the top of the hill owned by DTPC Kottayam, and one can book rooms in advance there. This place is not at all Electrified and thus the rooms too. Also, mobile coverage is also less comparatively.
After these Rest house one can go to Kudayathoorumala and other hills by Jeep or By foot. At the time sunset the atmosphere changes to cold, and the view of Malankara reservoir from the top of Kudayathoormala will be a superb one to check the efficiency of your dearest SLR.

The next to explore here is 'MuniGuha' and the Sun rise. For that one has to step down the peak. Now the journey, by foot, will be through a beautiful grassland, then starts the hike of Mankunnu. One can't find any clear cut path there to the top hill, so have to be assisted by one guide or a native. At the top one can see the yellowish Sun, in the mist. The mist will be very thick in the morning.
Now to Muni Guha, a small cave surrounded by the woods. Now the return the whole path from the hill. Then starts the journey to Muni Guha by jeep or by foot. If you are not at familiar with the hard trekking better go by a jeep. Because for a half hour the journey will be through a highly rocky area. then it changes to grass land with narrow paths. But thick grasses will be more dangerous, because sometimes they will be taller than you...!
After a 45 minutes walk or 30 minutes drive one can reach the woody area, and can see the cave surrounded by the woods. It has only a narrow opening, and at a time only one can crawl through it. Inside the cave it will be very dark, so please take a torch for lighting up. At the end of the cave one can see a small stream, which is said that, it never dries. In the monsoon, the stream will be more thick and wide.
Now there is another rock, from where one can explore the real beauty of 5 or 6 districts in Kerala, includes Thrissur, Pathanamthitta, Alappuzha, Kottayam and Idukki and sometimes even Kozhikkode. The way to that rock too a grass land journey, where the grasses are of enough height to cover you...!

Actually the journey to Ilaveezhpoonchira or the trekking starts from Idukki district, but the valley is situated in Kottayam District. The most suitable and easiest route to reach here is through Pala of Kottayam district

Best time to visit here is November to March, although those fond of monsoon rains may visit between the months of June to August.
