Ponmudi-Another picture-pretty hill station in Kerala

A picture-pretty hill station in Thiruvananthpuram district of Kerala, Ponmudi is linked by narrow winding offering scenic view on all sides.

Ponmudi, the unspoilt greeny mindblowing beauty, is located on the Sahayadri's (a part of the Western Ghats mountain range), at a distance of 61 kilometers from Thiruvananthapuram in Kerala, South India, nearly a 2 hours drive from the town. The enchanting bounty of nature can be witnessed here in the quiet surroundings.

On the way to Ponmudi, the thick tropical forest greets one at the foot of the Ponmudi hill range. The forest recedes gradually giving way to neatly clipped tea bushes.

Ponmudi is connected to Trivandrum by a narrow winding road which offers a scenic view on the way to Ponmudi. The climate is always pleasant and it serves as a base for trekking and hiking. Drive way here winds up the mountain, climbing through steep slopes carpeted with tea bushes, rubber trees and garden of Coffee, cardamom and pepper.

The meandering silver mountain streams guide you to quaint spots rich in unusually beautiful orchids, wild trees and plants. Smell the hill greens mingled with the scent of spices that intoxicate you into a state of everlasting peace and give you a sense of freedom.

Perched at an altitude of over 100 m above sea level on the Western Ghats, the shimmering green waters of the winding streams and verdant woods of Ponmudi do not spare anybody.

There are a good number of shops on the beach. Shops sell Blankets, Goods, Jewellery and ornaments mainly from Kashmir, Rajasthan or Nepal. Spices, the specialty of Kerala, are also available here.

Other attractions near Ponmudi include Golden Valley and a number of rivulets and rapids, some even across the road.

Another attraction in the region is Agasthyarkoodam which is one of the highest peaks in the Western Ghats and the highest peak (1868 m) in the district. This peak is famous for its wilderness, and can be accessed only with permission from the Forest Department. Meenmutty Falls is also a famous attraction in the range.

Accommodation can be availed at Government Tourist Complex. The Complex consists of a guesthouse with 24 rooms, and ten small stone cottages sitting on the hillside.

It takes 2 hours by road, driving 65 kms northeast from Thiruvananthapuram, to get to Ponmudi. Bus services are frequent.
