Alappey/Alappuzha-Venice of The East

Alappuzha/Alleppey, known as 'Venice of the East', is now grown to an important backwater tourists centre in Kerala. Alappuzha has a different geographical feature, from other districts of Kerala, of having the water in level with the land. This gives the advantage of getting a closer look at the village life on shore while on a backwater ride.

Alappey/Alappuzha, is famous for its backwaters, Mirror still lagoons, picture like lakesides, Palm fringed canals and shores bustling with glimpses from the day to day life in the country side.

Alappey/Alappuzha has a largest network of Canals and is a centre for backwater cruises in Kerala. Large number of tourist are attracted to this district because of its boat races, houseboat holidays, backwaters, beaches etc. Alappuzha has also earned fame in the commercial world as as the world's chief supplier of Coir.



Another importatnt place in Alappuzha, the land of lush paddy fields, Kuttanad is called the rice bowl of Kerala. It lies at the very heart of the backwaters. The scenic countryside of Kuttanad with its shimmering waterways also has a rich crop of banana, cassava and yam. This perhaps the only region where farming is done 1.5 to 2 ms below sea level. Inland waterways which flow above land level are an amazing feature of this region.

Sailing along in a ‘kettuvallam’ (houseboat) through the enchanting backwaters of Alappuzha is sure to rob your heart. Palm fringed narrow canals winding through the vast expanse of paddy fields and the neat tiny hamlets lined up along either sides of the canals are sights one can never forget. One can glimpse Chinese fishing nets, flocks of ducks swimming around the banks and tiny birds flying across the sky. It is as close as one can get to feel the vibrant life in the countryside of God’s own country.



By virtue of its proximity to the sea, the town has always enjoyed a unique place in the maritime history of Kerala.

Some important tourists places in Alappuzha district are:

Krishnapuram Palace: In the 18th century, Krishnapuram Palace was built during the reign of the Travancore monarch, Marthanda Varma, is a double storied structure which displays typical characteristics of Kerala architecture-gabled roofs, dormar windows, narrow corridors. It houses one of the largest mural paintings in Kerala called the Gajendra Moksham.

Pathiramanal : This is a small beautiful island in the Vembanad Lake and is accessible only by boat from Kumarakom and Muhamma.



Ambalappuzha: The Sri Krishna Temple at Ambalapuzha, 14 kms from Alleppey is among Kerala's more famous ones boasting of the typical temple architectural style of the state. It is equally famed for its palpayasam.

Punnapra: A short distance from Alappuzha is Punnapra, a village which has gone down in history as the scene of a bitter and heroic fighting between the communists and Travancore State Police in the Punnapra Vayalar Communist uprising of 1946.
Alappuzha Beach: This is one of the most popular picnic spots in Alappuzha. ntertainment facilities at the Vijaya beach park add to the attractions of the beach. There is also an old lighthouse which is greatly fascination to visitors.

The month of August is the best time to visit Alappuzha. (Tourists season August-March)

The region plays host to water regattas featuring snake boats and country canoes of varying sizes. Alappuzha Backwaters is renowned for the annual Nehru Trophy Snake Boat Race held on the second Saturday of August.



Another significant race is the Payipad Boat Race, which takes place over three days. It commences from the 'Onam' festival day. There is a snake boat parade during the first two days while the contest takes place on the third day.

The other Commercial activities Alappuzha includes - toddy tapping, fishing , coir making, prawn farming.
