Kavvayi Backwaters--for those who think backwater tourism is only possible at alappuzha and kumarakom.

Kavvayi is a small island, near Payyannur in the Kannur district. The island is connected with Payyannur by a small bridge on the Kavvayi Pozha which means the river of Kavvayi.

In Kannur, an inspiring stretch of water body Kavvayi Kayal could perhaps be your next, most fascinating destination among the backwaters in Kerala. The backwaters down the south of Kerala; like those in and around Kollam and Alappuzha have their own unique attractions, surroundings and ways of life. Kavvayi Kayal too has its own unique elements that could easily make you fall in love with it.

Kavvayi kayal (Also known as valiyaparambu kayal) is the third largest backwater in Kerala and the largest in malabar. It extends from Payyannur in Kannur Dist to Nileshwar in Kasargod Dist. One of its peculiarity is the several islands scattered all over the backwater Valiyaparamba island being the largest. This virgin backwaters, the islands and the beach in the valiyaparamba island adds to the immense tourism potential of north malabar.

It is surrounded by small islands called kadappuram. Access to these small islands is only through small boats or traditional "thonis". these small islands are directly facing the Arabian sea. the Arabian sea roars in these areas with great force and hence it is really unbearable and difficult to stay here. Morover, these islands are going on becoming smaller and smaller and people from these islands have been moving to cities due to urbanization.

You can simply unwind by taking a walk along the land that fringes the Kavvayi Kayal or else may step into one of the country boats and relax in the cool breeze while enjoying the abundance of surrounding greenery. This backwater stretch is full of interesting sights and experiences that would keep preventing your interest level from hitting a low. Locally called as Kavvayi Kayal or the backwater of Kavvayi, this lesser known backwater of northern Kerala is the result of the five rivers viz. River Kavvayi and its tributary streams Kankol, Vannathichal, Kuppithodu, and Kuniyan.Seperated from the Arabian Sea by the 24 km long Valiyaparamba Island which has 20 meter to 250 meters wide. Two outlets to the sea are permitted for big boats entry.

A picture is better than a thousand words.Beauty lies in the eyes of the Beholder.

Whoever said " If there is Paradise on earth then it is here in Kashmir" .........Did not see Kavvayi Backwaters then.(words of a Kavvayi villager).
