Kannur fort (St.Angelos fort) & Thalassery fort

St. Angelo Fort (also known as Kannur Fort or Kannur Kota), is a fort facing the Arabian Sea, situated 3 km from the town of Kannur.It was built in 1505 by Sir Francisco de Almeida, the first Portuguese Viceroy of India and is on the Arabian sea about 3 km from Kannur town. The fort changed hands several times. In 1663 the Dutch captured it and sold it to the Arakkal Royal Family in 1772. The British conquered it in 1790 and transformed it into one of their major military stations on the Malabar Coast. It is fairly well preserved as a protected monument under the Archaeological Survey of India. A painting of this fort and the fishing ferry behind it can be seen in the Rijksmuseum in Amsterdam. The Dutch captured the fort from the Portuguese in 1663, then later sold the fort to king Ali Raja of Arakkal.In 1790 the British seized it and transformed it into their chief military station in Malabar. In the 19th century, the British established the Cannanore Cantonment, which includes the St. Angelo Fort.

The fort is a magnificent structure with massive walls and a deep moat. A mesmerizing view of the Moppila Bay never fails to enthrall visitors. The fort is situated very close to the sea and is separated from the sea by a strong sea wall. One can also get a great view of the Dharmadam Island that is located at a distance of 100 meters from the shore. The bay is a modern fishing harbor that is equipped with the latest technology that is required in the fishing industry.

How to Reach:

By Air-The Karipur Airport is located at a distance of 93 kilometers from the fort.
By Rail/ Train-The Kannur railway station is located at a distance of 3 kilometers from here.
By Road-The place is well connected by a wide network of roads that make the fort accessible from anywhere in Kerala.
Actually this fort is situated very near to the Kannur town.Buses are available at all time. the road connecting the fort to city road is known as FORT road.

THALASSERY FORT:

The British arrived in Thalassery in 1683 and errected a goods shed there. They shifted their commercial capital to Thalassery from Kozhikode, following obstruction from the Dutch.
In 1700, the British built the Thalassery Fort on a small hill called Tiruvellapadkunnu and in 1708, it was strengthened by increasing its height and with bastions. The fort is a square structure built of laterite and is distinguished by its massive ventilated walls and strong flanking bastions. It was here that Haider's captain was imprisoned.The famous St.John's Anglican church is behind this fort.
This magnificent fort is located at a distance of around 22 kilometers from Kannur. It was the military center of the British troops. The Thalassery fort stands upright on a rocky cliff on the Thalasseri beach. It is a monument of much historical significance now. The fort has many attractive features that have survived the tempests of time and have survived to this day.
The fort has massive walls and an imposing structure with a huge gateway. There is also a lighthouse situated in the fort. The fort has a cemetery, a church and the collector's mansion nearby. Many British officials have been laid to rest in this cemetery that is named after Sir Edward Brennen. The surrounding environs lend a very mystical touch to the fort and a visit to the fort will definitely make you feel relaxed and give you peace of mind. It is said that the fort has a secret tunnel that opens out to the sea through which the inhabitants used to escape in case of an attack.

By Air-The nearest airport is at Kozhikode, at a distance of around 93 kilometers from the fort.
By Rail/ Train-Kannur railway station is close to this fort and can be easily accessed.
By Road-Kannur is well connected to the rest of Kerala by a wide network of roads and the fort is reachable from anywhere in Kannur.
