Ezhimala Hill........!

Ezhimala(286 m above sea level) is in Kannur district of Kerala, south India and was the capital of the ancient Mooshika kings and is considered to be an ancient historical site. It is a conspicuous, isolated cluster of hills, forming a promontory, 38 km north of Kannur. A flourishing sea port and centre of trade in ancient Kerala, it was one of the major battle fields of the Chola-Chera war of the 11th century. It is believed that Lord Buddha had visited Ezhimala.

Ezhimala is one of the place which is recorded in the most ancient History of Northern Kerala. "Mooshika Vamsham" written by Athulan throws light into the pre 10th Century history fo Northern Kerala. The first king og Mooshika Vamsham (Mooshika Dynasty)was Rama Ghata Mooshaka, and his Capital was Ezhimala. Athulan describes the later Kings of this Dynasty, which is now mentioned as the Kolathiri Dynasty. The successors of King Ramaghata Mooshakan shifted their capital to Pazhi (the Present village of Pazhayangadi), Valabha Pattanam (Valapattanam) and to nearer places.

Ezhimala is known as the "Mrithasangeevani garden" (Mrithasangeevani is a medicine for bringing back the dead person alive) in the early days. A piece of hill fallen at this area when "Hanumaan" was taking the whole hill with medicine to “Lanka” for saving "LORD RAMA". The villages around Ezhimala are generally called as Ramanthali Panchayat which consists of Ramanthali, Vadakkumbad, Poochal, Kunnaru, Palakkod, Ettikkulam etc. Ramanthali panchayat is surrounded with water. You may call this panchayat as an Island with very beautiful seen of sea, rivers and forest. The rest of the area is fully covered with coconut trees. This island is currently connected to Payyanur and Payangadi towns through two bridges at Ponnakkadvu and Palakkod respectively. The climate is very pleasant at this area. This is one of the points of tourist attraction. Currently the west and south sides of the hill are taken for the Naval Academy purposes.

There is a famous temple of Hanuman, the Mount Deli Light House. It is maintained by the Indian Navy and is a restricted area. The beach sand is of a different texture and the sea is bluer than in other areas. At the Ettikulam bay, one can enjoy watching dolphins. Bordered by sea on three sides, Ezhimala is set to occupy a prominent place in the Naval history of the country, consequent to the proposal for commissioning the Naval Academy there. Indian Naval Ship (INS) Zamorin was commissioned marking Phase I of the Ezhimala Naval Academy project, which is completed in 2007.

Reaching Ezhimala: The nearest airport to Kannur is at Karipur in Kozhikode, 125 km away. The nearest railway station is at PAYYANNUR(8km). The major railway station is kannur itself. Buses are available at all time to this place..
